El Puente: Self-service kiosks in New York for Amazon.

El Puente is a network of self-service kiosks for New York bodegas that let people shop on Amazon paying in cash.

What it does

  • Amazon product search on a touchscreen
  • Pay with bills on the spot
  • Bill acceptor controlled over serial communication
  • Automated Amazon purchase as soon as payment is confirmed

The challenge

Many people in New York rely on cash and have no card, which shuts them out of e-commerce. Integrating bill-acceptor hardware with a modern shopping experience, and automating Amazon orders without a public API for this flow, took serious engineering.

What we built

A Flutter desktop app for the kiosk interface, a Java core that talks to the bill acceptor and the PostgreSQL database, and a Python microservice that acts as an “automated shopper”, placing the Amazon order the moment payment is confirmed. Everything runs on Azure.
